When I moved to the Ocean State over 20 years ago, these Rhode Island foods have been new to me and some of them took a little time to get used to and others that I liked from the start. Now I can’t imagine eating anything but The Rhode Island style calamari and I look forward to feasting on lobster rollers, suffocation, clacs and doughboys in summer, watered with DEL lemonade of course!
These are just a few of my choices for Must Try Rhode Island Foods – Origin and unique, street food and home cooking. It is certainly not a complete list of foods from Rhode Island, but these are some protruding facts that you simply cannot miss.
10 must try the Rhode Island Foods
If you are wondering what to eat in the Rhode Island, start with these delicious favorites of the ocean state.
Calamars

Unlike other parts of the country, the Rhode Island Calamari is very slightly beaten, then fried or jumped and served with a mixture of garlic butter and hot cherry peppers; And it’s delicious.
In fact, Ri-Style Calamari is the official aperitif of the state. I rarely have a bad plate of calamars, so you really can’t go wrong in the beautiful restaurants of Rhode Island; But if you want to stand out, try to order it Spinning to Providence.
If you like seafood, head to Matuck oyster bar For calamari and agricultural oysters locally – my favorite in the state!
Del Lemonade

Based on Italian lemon ICES, Del’s offers frozen lemonade (like a lemon loop) and is omnipresent Rhode Island during the summer Permanent stands with roadside carts in popular attractions. Del’s is now available in a variety of flavors, including mango / fishing and watermelon.
Lobster ravioli
While many restaurants serve it, most of them buy masters’ lobster ravioli – Venda ravioli.
Located in Depasquale Square in Providence Federal Hill District, Venda Ravioli is an Italian gastronomic market, with a sidewalk coffee. If you can’t get a table there, try Constantino from their sister restaurant right in front. You can even buy frozen versions on many local markets, such as the Dave market.
Clam cakes

A light cake is a mixture of fried dough the size of an egg with small pieces of clams inside. I think of that like a donut but clearly a little disagreement!
The clam cakes are one of these foods that people swear by a seller against another; But if you want to try two big examples, head to Narragansett to try Iggy And Carrie aunt.
However, I was recently converted to think that the best clam cakes in Rhode Island are at Brothers of Dune Brothers of Sea Catering truck in Providence. Their secret? Cook them in the beef fat. He adds this additional layer of flavor that distinguishes them.
I am also a big fan of lobster rolls, fried clams and clash cakes Blount curve in Warren.
Boy-boys

While you are at Iggy, you should also collect Doughboys. Each region seems to have its own version of the fried dough (funnel cakes, nj style zeppolis…) and Doughboys are from Rhode Island.
Doughboys are flat pieces of fried dough. Others are smaller and you get them by half-dozen. Served with the fryer, you can make them understand, with sugar, cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar.
Pizza Strips (aka party pizza)

When I moved for the first time in Rhode Island, I did not understand these strips of pizza without cheese that presented each other at each party. I have often heard: “I will bring party pizzas!” This oddity has since grown up on me and now I am sometimes the one that brings the party pizza.
The pizza strips are bands of focaccia dough surmounted by a thick tomato sauce. They are served at room temperature and are available in most local bakeries and markets.
Sand

When I was talking about Doughboys, I mentioned Zeppolis in NJ style, which are small fried balls (quite strangely, the size of a clack).
These are sold by the dozen or half a dozen, and garnished with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar. It was one of my favorite treats when visiting the promenade on the shore of Jersey.
So when I moved to RI, I heard about this party called Saint-Joseph, which was celebrated by eating zeppole. I was excited until I was going to the bakery and the zeppole sold in RI is actually a creamp paste filled with a cream type cream or another option, and garnished with cream and generally a cherry.
Yummy, but not what I expected. Unfortunately, Zeppole is mainly around Saint-Joseph in March, so if you visit at another time, you might miss you.
But if you are lucky to be in town at the right time, I would recommend stopping LaSalle bakery In Providence (also collect one of their incredible red velvet cupcakes while you are there.)
Coffee cabinets and coffee milk
In Rhode Island, a wardrobe is not only a place to store things, it is a coffee ice drink at coffee, coffee syrup and milk. I do not know if it is the official drink of the state, but it should be. You no longer see them too often, but it is something that long -standing residents of Rhode Island are still knowing and they are still served at Newport Creamery.
However, coffee milk is something you always see around, or at least you can buy coffee syrup on the market. Coffee milk is made by adding a sweet coffee concentrate called milk coffee syrup, in the same way as you make chocolate milk.
Faras (aka fate in the plush)

The pranks are another famous food from Rhode Island that I have never heard of before moving here, but now order or serve often. Suffer shots are a form of a stuffed clam which is exclusive to Rhode Island.
They are filled with a breading that includes chopped Quahogs (RI status molluscs), herbs and pieces of peppers and chourico sausages.
Suffering is another thing you can get anywhere and my favorites come from my premises Dave market; But if you prefer to eat them, try Finn’s Harbourside at East Greenwich.
New York Weiners Hot system

I had to put this last because after 21 years in RI, I still do not understand why the inhabitants praise a food which was appointed according to another state. I also lived in New York and I don’t get the connection. I guess it comes back to Coney Island style hot dogs, although I saw similar offers on the Upstate Eats path in New York on the way to Buffalo.
But, that said, these hot dogs are a classic RI food, so if you want to try it, go to one of the OLNEYVILLE NY SYSTEM’s Locations.
The traditional Wiener is made with a small slim francfurter in calf and pork, which gives it a different taste of a traditional hot dog. It is served in a steamed bun and garnished with celery salt, yellow mustard, chopped onions and a seasoned meat sauce.
Bonus
Rhode Island is a gastronomic state and Providence is a gastronomic city. So, even if I can list the best food from Rhode Island, there are a few honorable mentions that I just can’t leave aside.
- Donut cake. Yeah, it is essential food that I only saw RI and you can only get them from Allie’s Donuts to North Kingstown, but you would better order in advance.
- Gregg chocolate cake. Yes, you can get a chocolate cake anywhere. But can you get this thick, rich, humid and additional chocolate cake as you can at the Gregg restaurant.
- Johnnycakes. These corn flour pancakes are around, but more also widespread.
- RO-Style style clam chowder. Unlike the boosts of New England clams, RI has a light broth.
- Dynamites. Hamburger meat with peppers, onions and tomato sauce – a bit like a sloppy joe.
