9 must try PA Dutch Foods (and where to find them)


The Dutch country in Pennsylvania is a region of the Pennsylvania Center-South Center, which includes eight counties, including the Amish country of Lancaster, the capital of Harrisburg’s state, Hershey (the sweetest city in the world) and Gettysburg. This region houses descendants of a large German population who came to the United States to escape religious persecution. Today, there are large Amish and Mennonite communities, which contribute to the unique food of Dutch foods of the AP.

As I like to find the best local foods when I travel, I take stock of the inhabitants and get recommendations, then explore my belly. Of course, you can get a chicken pie everywhere, including the freezer section of your local grocery store. What makes the Dutch version of different is that there is no crust. Instead, the mixture of chicken, carrots and potatoes is garnished with large square noodles. In a way, it reminds me of chicken and dumplings that you would get in the south.

A great place to get a sample is Dienner’s country restaurant in the rocks.

Ham balls

This one is really a skyscraper because I suppose it is a game on an icy pineapple honey ham, but the ham balls are a mixture of ground pork and ham served with a soft pineapple frosting. Apple dumplings

There are many large bakeries in the Dutch country in Pennsylvania which serve apple dumplings, including the Zig and Littz bakery. This Amish treat is also served as breakfast. It is a simple dish with an entire apple (peeled and born) filled with butter, sugar and spices, then wrapped in pie dough and served with a syrupy sauce.

Chicken corn soup

Chicken corn soup is one of the ultimate comforting foods in Lancaster and the Dutch country in Pennsylvania. It is made with tender chicken, sweet corn, chiefs (like small dough dumplings – although some versions use egg noodles) and hard eggs.

Smorgasbord

For a little of everything else, like chow chow, pepper jam, fried chicken, cinnamon bread with raisins, chicken pie with noodles, brown buttercut noodles, chicken kibble, pork and sauerkraut, and much more, stop with an authentic Amish smorgasbord as Miller Smorgasbord or party at Amish at Simple and fanciful farms.

  • Homemade ice cream in Boehringers Drive-in in Adamstown
  • Visit LAPP Valley Farm Creamery around 4 p.m. to see them milking the cows, then try their ice
  • Go to breakfast Bright at Ephrata for Dippys eggs and fats
