Kissing the shores of Lake Champlain in Vermont, you will find a family complex that has been unchanged for generations, with the exception of its modern equipment. It is a place where families come together after the year. It is also a place where friendships are knotted and the romance flourishes. This very special place is the Basin Harbor Resort & Boat Club in Vergennes, Vermont.
I had the chance to visit a mother-daughter getaway in June to write a review of the Basin Harbor Club. Although our small family unit of two felt small compared to the many family meetings and multigenerational trips to the complex during our stay, it was immediately clear how much the port of Basin is for families.
I had already heard incredible things about their children’s club, but we have also seen teenage packs walking on the property and the lawns are dotted with iron horses games with a giant Connect 4 and chess. There were even a lot of dogs, noting the policy adapted to pets from Basin Harbor.
If you are looking for a family vacation by the lake with many activities for all ages, good food and a classic and relaxed atmosphere, it’s time to check Basin Harbor.
Basin Harbor Review
Note: We were guests from Basin Harbor Resort & Boat Club for this review, all opinions are mine.
The port of Basin is a full service complex, with chalets by the lake for families and rooms in four lodges throughout the property. You will find several restaurants, a full range of activities and a fabulous children’s camps that will keep the whole occupied and happy family. Before deciding whether or not the port of Basin suits you for you, let’s go back to accommodation, location, equipment and restaurants at the port of Basin.
Cottages du Lac Champlain
Although wearing the pool is one of the Historical Hotels of AmericaIts 45 rooms and 74 chalets have been updated to reflect a clean nautical sensation. The decor uses earth tones and artifacts in the history of 131 years of the station.
There are not two chalets at Basin Harbor because they were each built according to the wishes of the original guests. Some chalets neglect the lake, while others are hidden in the woods or near the golf course or the gardens. There is a range of studio chalets, one room, two bedrooms and three bedrooms to choose that are ideal for groups or families of all sizes.

We stayed in the chalet by Lake Greenledge, two bedrooms, which offers a breathtaking view of the lake from the living room and the main bedroom. Due to its perch on the edge of the cliff, there was no outdoor space with a big view, but each chalet is different. Although keeping in mind that the chalets are not the type where you can simply go out and jump in the lake, but no worries, you have the front of the port for that!
I loved the set of the chalet, with a mixture of comfortable brown leather sofas, comfortable beds and nautical elements like old -fashioned oars and nautical skis adorning the walls. There was also a mini kitchen with a sink and a small refrigerator, but no hob.
Each room had its own bathroom with two sinks, which facilitates negotiation of the time of the family bathroom. The master bedroom offered a King-de-de-joint bed, a large closet and a chest of drawers. The second room included twin beds and its own adjoining bathroom.
Activities by the lake
Unfortunately, we did not spy on a field, the mysterious lake creature that looks like the Monster du Loch Ness and lived in Lake Champlain. I guess it is not a surprise because, apart from whether or not you believe mythical creatures, Lake Champlain is the sixth lake of the United States, so it has a lot of room to hide.
The lake has a width of 12 miles at its widest and can be up to 400 feet deep. However, where the port of Basin is, you can clearly see the New York Palisade cliffs and the distant mountains of Adirondack through the lake.

Basin Harbor offers many ways to go out on the lake, pedalos, paddleboards, children’s boats, fishing posts and water toys that you can borrow from kayaks, canoes and pontoon boats that you can rent. If you plan in advance, you can also hire a motor boat for water skiing or tubes.
The front of the port also offers a swimming area, with chairs that line the quay and rocks on the shore, and two large water trampolines. When we visited the water at the end of June, the water was still a little too cold for us to brave, but there were many who did not let the cold stop them.
Basin Harbor also offers cruises with narrated lakes on the Escape Tour boat, which is a wonderful way to explore the lake and learn more about ecology and history. We released on one of these cruises of 1 to 2 hours during our stay, which taught us about the history of the lake and its natural environment. We even spied on a few white heads!
The captain and the crew will also tell you everything about the rich history of the region, including the many naval battles that have occurred nearby.
Swimming pool and activities

In addition to the lake, Basin Harbor has a heated swimming pool (Yay!), With towels and a bar service and hot tubs. It is not that big, but when we visited, the complex was not very crowded and we were able to obtain long chairs without problem. We even returned one evening for the “dive into the cinema” to watch Moana from a lounge chair.
Each evening, the complex offers a form of family entertainment, outdoor films with bingo evenings and joy lights. They always publish a weekly activity calendar so that you can plan your time. Simply note that not all activities are included and choose accordingly.
The other activities of the Port de Basin include the balloon of pickles, golf, rental bikes, volleyball, basketball, football, croquet, badminton, a gaga pit, giant failures, a hike, a 24/7 fitness center and history discussions. You are certainly not bored at Basin Harbor!
Kids Camp is also a favorite among young people and has been a place where friendships for life are formed. The emphasis is placed on healthy pleasure with activities that are personalized for age specific groups, ranging from swimming to crafts through games.
Dining in Basin Harbor

There are many restoration options at Basin Harbor, gastronomy at Ardelia in Sushi on the lawn of lodge and pizza of the Hattie pie near the swimming pool. Children will love to pick up lobster rolls in the full -belly restoration truck at the seafront. The port of Basin also offers a range of meal plans to relieve the stress on who orders what.
Breakfast at Ardelia in the main dining room is quite the trick with everything, from homemade jams to omelet stations and everything else. In the evening, Ardelia turns into gastronomy where, even if the jackets are not yet necessary, the trend would always be to dress for dinner.
It is almost difficult to believe that you might be hungry for the rest of the day, but when lunch takes place, it’s time to go to the Red Mill restaurant.
The Moulin Rouge, which operates from a renovated sawmill and backs up on a small landing track, serves both lunch and dinner with a mixture of burgers / sandwiches and full dishes. If children become too reckless while waiting for their food, there is always the playground and the iron pit next to it.

None of the disappointed foods, but one of the most pleasant meals was the dinner on the shore of Thursday evening on the north platform. With live music on the shores of Lake Champlain, it is an ideal way to launch or captone your summer. The party includes the boost, the molds, the salad, the cookies of the cheddar bay (so good), the beef, the fish and a large precraged lobster! Just make sure you make reservations in advance and take a seat earlier so as not to miss the dessert buffet.
Even if Basin Harbor is so great for large family groups, it was also a special place for a mother-daughter getaway. I find that when you travel with children, the best connections are established in the simplest places. Even if there was so much to do, it does not distract the beauty of nature and the old -fashioned pleasure. We can’t wait to come back again when we have even more people with whom to share it with.
