1) See the murals in Orgosolo
Located about 110 kilometers from Cagliari, Orgosolo is famous for its murals, and you should certainly not miss this amazing outdoor art museum, especially in winter while time is not the best to enjoy your stay at the beach.
There are other cities and villages in Sardinia with beautiful murals, but Orgosolo is the place where it all started, so opt for the real and original thing! From all 250 murals that you can find scattered throughout Sardinia, 150 are in Orgosolo, so it is obviously the “real matter”.
The history of murals in Orgosolo
Orgosolo’s first wall painting was painted by Dioniso, an anarchist group from Milan in the late 1960s. However, later, it was Francesco del Casino, a local teacher, who helps create more of them by making murals a local activity, because of its artistic history and helped by its students.
What do most murals represent?
The first wall was drawn in 1969, and They mainly represent political themes such as the opposition to the Nazi movement and the symbols of the rebellion against the governmentBut, although many of them are political in nature, there are several examples of other stories in and outside the village, such as a local lady selling flowers, a defensive flag in Palestine or a drawing of former presidents Bush and Obama.
Whether you are interested in its history and its meaning or not, they are worth seeing, the atmosphere by walking in Orgosolo is magic, and each tower you do can surprise you with another play of “Street Art”.
Best cultural visits to Barbagia and San Sperate
Guided tours or not? For the advantages and disadvantages
You can certainly visit Sardinia and historic regions like Barbagia by yourself at your own pace. The pro is that you are completely independent, you can take as much time as you want to visit a location or a show and that you are free to do what you want.
However, in my travel experience, the ideal would be to make independent wanders, then make a guided tour. Joining a tour, even if you are an independent traveler like me, will make you understand the stories behind what you see much better. And the sardrae wall paintings have tons of history behind them!
Here are the best absolute visits to the Barbagia region that I recommend as a room:
