It was not only the Obamas or the Kennedys who liked to spend a vacation on Martha’s Vineyard. This island off the coast of Cape Cod is a popular vacation spot in New England for many families. Fortunately, we have good friends who have a vacation on the vineyard for decades and they took us under their wing to show us the best things to do on the Martha vineyard for the first timer.
Tips for visiting Martha’s Vineyard
Before we embark on fun things to do on Martha’s Vineyard, let’s start with a few bases for the first visitors:
- If you want to bring a car, you must reserve the car reservation of car very far in advance. If you need specific dates for your vacation rental, book as soon as the ferry reservations open at the end of winter / early spring.
- If you want to make a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard, it is easier to take a passenger ferry and leave the car in Woods Hole unless you make your plans very early.
- For one day excursions, you can take the ferry for Oak Bluffs or Vineyard Haven from Woods Hole or Edgartown from Falmouth. Edgartown is a quieter city with pretty shops and restaurants. Oak Bluffs is the largest city with a lot to do and is ideal for children.
- There are a number of hotels on the vineyard if you stay just a long weekend, but most people will want to rent a beach house.
- The grocery store will be more expensive on the island, so if you stay for the week, try to store your car with the paper and the packaged products you will need for your stay.
